About the Speaker
Dr. (CA) Shailendra Saxena is a distinguished expert in accounting and taxation. A Commerce Graduate with a Ph.D. in Financial Management, he is a fellow member of three major professional bodies: the ICAI, ICMAI, and ICSI. His vast experience includes serving as a past chairman for regional chapters of both ICAI and ICMAI and currently holding positions on
important committees related to direct and indirect taxes. As a published author and a guest faculty at the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes & Narcotics (NACIN), Dr. Saxena
brought a wealth of practical and academic knowledge to the session.


The lecture was structured to be both informative and easy to follow. Dr. Saxena covered several key areas:
 Introduction to GST: Explained the fundamental concept, objectives, and the historical context of its introduction as a unified tax system.
 Types of GST: Provided a clear distinction between CGST, SGST, IGST, and UTGST with practical examples to illustrate their application in different scenarios.
 Key Features: Discussed core principles like “One Nation, One Tax” and the elimination of the cascading effect of taxes.
 GST Registration and ITC: Detailed the process of GST registration, including threshold limits, and demystified the concept of Input Tax Credit (ITC) and its benefits for businesses.
 New GST Slabs: A significant highlight was the discussion on the restructured GST rates. Dr. Saxena announced the abolition of the 12% and 28% slabs, simplifying the system to two standard rates: 5% and 18%. He also mentioned a special 40% slab for sin and luxury items and a 0% exemption for essential goods. This provided students with up-to-date and highly relevant information.

 Challenges and Future Scope: Addressed the practical difficulties of GST compliance and filing, and discussed its potential for further evolution.

Beyond the technical content, Dr. Saxena shared an inspiring life lesson. He advised students that success is not just about academic degrees but about developing multiple skills and practical knowledge. He encouraged them to be continuous learners to build a successful and meaningful career.
